Last week Christopher Pincher, Member of Parliament for Hints, Drayton Bassett, Weeford and Tamworth quizzed the Deputy Prime Minster, Nick Clegg, who was standing in for the Prime Minster, on HS2 during PMQs. Mr Pincher raised concerns over the clarity and consistency of the information given out by the rail firm.
Mr Pincher said:
"The leadership of HS2 has shown a lamentable failure to provide clear and consistent information to residents and businesses affected by phase 1 of its proposals. Today in my constituency, it is holding a road show to tell my constituents about phase 2 of its proposals. Will my right hon. Friend work with his colleagues in government to ensure that HS2 provides decent information and decent compensation to everyone affected as quickly as possible?
In response the Deputy Prime Minister said:
"I know that the hon. Gentleman has strong views on this matter, and of course I agree that not only should full compensation be available, as it will be, but that the right level of information should be provided. The phase 2 route consultation, which started in October, is due to end in January, and as part of that process, 36 information events will be held near the phase 2 route, including the one he alluded to in his constituency. Those are opportunities for people to make their views known..."
Later Mr Pincher commented:
"The level and consistency of information given out by HS2 has not been adequate and continues to leave residents very uncertain about the future of their properties and what mitigation will be available. Local communities are living with the blight of HS2 now and it is unacceptable for HS2 not to provide a clear and consistent message. I will be urging HS2 to work more closely and more effectively with residents who live near the Phase II proposed route as well as those already affected by Phase I."
Phase II route consultations close on the 31st of January 2014 and consultation on the Environmental Statement, which was presented to parliament at the start of the month, closes on 24th January 2014.
